Your website is a lot like your car, you’ve invested a lot into it and it’s important that you keep it maintained for it to continue to run smoothly. So what practices do you have in place to ensure that if the worst happens you still have your website working?
After all, if your site crashes and you are not protected, you could easily go without any online presence for weeks even months before things are resolved. In that time how much business would you lose?

When polled, nearly 80% of SMEs and startups do NOT have an online marketing strategy. Some citing that they do not have time whilst for others it is the fear of doing something wrong and not fully understanding what needs to be done and when.
Like anything in life, if you do not have a plan then you will not have a clearly defined direction on how to get from A to B. As the old saying goes, you either Fail to Plan or Plan to Fail!
Of course, there is the other side where you have those that “think” they know online marketing as they “use Facebook”, but as I often say, I know how to use excel, that does not make me an accountant...

How often I hear that people are happy with the “look” of their website, all gleaming, great images, layout and yet something is missing…..Oh, that’s right, Sales!
You see anyone can build a website (sorry but it’s true) but it takes someone with experience on marketing, business accrument and conversion knowledge to make you a website that works, converts and brings in sales.
As I said this week, it is like having a Ferrari, but without the engine – who wants that? The prospect of having a top of the range super sports car that turns heads, but without its main components is nothing more than an ornament sitting by the side of the road.
Automation systems, lead pages, bump carts are just the start and that is not even touching on blogging, podcasting and Vlogging that all need to be done in order to increase your brand and experience.
And believe me, if your website does not have at least these items in the back end, then your site will not go anywhere fast it at all. Unfortunately, it is also one of the main reasons why so many start-ups fail.

When you start out getting your website built or even if you have had one done but the end result is not what you expected, it is too easy to point fingers at the web designer as being at fault.
Now, this post is not to justify something I have done, as I personally not had any issues around this, but rather I do get a lot of people asking me for help after their site has been built and has manifested into something that is not what they are after. Unfortunately, this does come down to a number of reasons which can easily be avoided right at the start.
Get ready to be armed with my top tips on how to approach your new website build to ensure you get 100% what you want.

So you have this wonderful website for your business and yet something is not feeling right. It’s been up and running for over 6 months now and enquiries or even visitors seem on the light side and yet surely it’s your marketing and not the website….right?
The thing is, your website is your silent salesperson and if it is giving out the wrong message, or not giving clear and concise messages, then you site won’t be delivering or doing much for you. After all, if you employed a salesperson that was not delivering, would you not consider firing them or at least checking to see what is wrong?
Here are the top 7 signs that your website could do with a makeover, so time to hit the F5 refresh button and start making some changes.

There are so many different ways for people to get in touch with you these days, and so many new great ideas coming out, but there are some that simply seem to have not taken off and in the case of TEL, personally, I just very surprised that not more people are using this simple but very effective online tool.
Tel or dot TEL is a domain name which you can purchase for around $10 (got mine from namescheap) and comes with its own hosting solution that allows you to quickly produce and create your very own online digital business card/business directory for your business.
To start with you can manage the content (which is created by completing form fields) very quickly and easily from any web browser or mobile application. This means if you change your details, website, phone or even your business, you can make these changes on the fly. Simply complete the required area on the site and click save and it’s all done – take a look at mine markhoward.tel

This week I was advising a friend on this matter and they asked about building a site or getting their site changed over. The problem they are facing is that there are a number of options but was unsure which way to go:
Should he build on a template system such as Wix or Squarespace for example – answer NO. These sites are ok but he (and most likely like you) is not a designer or marketeer, As I pointed out you never get a second chance to make a first impression and sites such as these are causing SMEs more damage than good.
He also pointed out that there are people offering to build sites for as little as R500 or £25. Again as I said, do you really think you will get a good site that is built correctly, with images that have the appropriate copyrights to them within the site? The answer is of course NO!
So why it may seem like a great idea to save money by opting for the cheaper option, would you expect people to do the same with your business? What does a self-build site or cheaply built site say about you and your business ethics?
